Methods of Work

From the beginning, a lot of care has been exerted to move forward slowly and professionally.

The first step was to complete a study of the project. This was mainly done by Riwaq organization which is specialized in architectural heritage preservation. Maps depicting the location of Birzeit were produced. They showed its landscape, water springs and its position in relation with nearby cities and towns. They also showed the old town with a thorough survey of all the buildings, their conditions, ownership, dwelling etc.

The second step was to propose an area to protect depending on the outcome of the first step. Hence a new zoning was proposed to prevent further damage and destruction of what remained. These areas were divided into different phases in order to establish priorities of work. But protective zoning was proposed and several meetings took place to get the concept across to the municipal officials and the minister of the local government, all of whom seemed to be encouraging, supportive and excited to see how the project will develop.

The third step was to get a sense of Birzeit's community's response to the idea; hence several visits were organized to talk to people, the church, other social organizations and clubs. This was also important to lobby and advocate for the next step.
The fourth step was to establish a non profit organization whose main purpose is to represent the stakeholders and property owners. The organization is intended to lead the necessary efforts and activities in order to guarantee the progress and success of the project. Indeed, this is to be done in a professional manner preserving the transparency and cooperation needed for to mobilize the residents, the church, the university, other organizations, the municipality and the community elders.
